Dr. Michelle L. Malkin is the Director of the Gambling Research and Policy Initiative (GRPI) and an assistant professor of Criminal Justice and Criminology at East Carolina University. She earned her Ph.D. and Master’s of Science in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University. She earned her Juris Doctorate from Northeastern University School of Law and her Bachelor’s of Art in Sociology from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Dr. Malkin's research interests include a focus on gambling-related harms, gambling-motivated crime, and the gambling prevalence, behavior, and risk of under-researched populations.

​Dr. Malkin has built a dynamic academic career in gambling-related research at the intersection of criminology, law, and public health, distinguished by rigorous research, substantial grant funding, policy impact, and national leadership in the rapidly evolving field of gambling studies.

Michele Stacey, Ph.D. (Vice President)

Dr. Michele Stacey is an associate professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at East Carolina University (ECU). She earned her Ph.D. and Master’s of Arts in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She received her Bachelor’s of Art in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Her area of expertise is in quantitative methodology, victimology, and social control.

​Dr. Stacey’s career reflects a blend of rigorous scholarship, impactful teaching, funded research leadership, and professional service. Her work continues to shape discussions around crime, inequality, gambling, and justice, positioning her as a respected voice in both academic and policy circles.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
